Solo sax. Jazzy with some extended ideas: multiphonic buzzes, trills, air-through-horn, etc. Lots of fast gallops. |
Robinson hovers near conventional sax methods most of the time, but the focus here is on sound exploration rather than "tunes." Lots of work around individual ideas that spiral outward gradually.
Robinson lists Roscoe Mitchell's "Nonaah" as a major influence here: "I was mesermized by Mitchell's use of repetition and the unpredictable psychology of performing improvised solo saxophone."
1- Gruff, low-toned flurries. Buzzy. Fast later.
2- Quavering long trills. A controlled steady intensity that grows/blossoms near the end.
3- Slow, lyrical. Not as placid/airy as 7.
4- Short, pecking statements.
5- Sour off-toned trilling. Airy higher registers later.
6- Bold, jazzy little declarations, separated by quiet noise flurries
7- Slow, gentle. (FALSE START w/a quiet "sorry.") Close-mic'ed so you hear the fluid air behind each tone.
8- Rapid-fire pellets. Sweetens up later for a few strong, jazzy lines.
9- Tiny bold phrases separated by long blank spots. Meditative but not quiet.
10- Toney warbling, a mid/slow jazz sketch. Tiny and perky at the end.
11- High-toned questioning burble, almost vocal. Like a monologue. Ends quiet.
12- Pecking questions, insistent and snowballing. Wraps up neatly.
13- Exotic, buzzy keening. Ends in a small whirlwind.
14- Lots of fast cascades
15- Sensitive big tone, melodic -- into a raspy ramble.
