ETHNIC HERITAGE ENSEMBLE: Mama’s House Live
Katalyst, 2008
AVANT-GARDE: Chicago/AACM percussionist Kahil El’Zabar has kept this afrocentric jazz group going in various duo/trio configurations since 1973. This incarnation features El’Zabar, sax master Ernest Dawkins and rising-star trumpeter Corey Wilkes. They stand tall with deep grooves and highly creative soloing, grounded in El’Zabar’s meditative patterns and explosive grunts. A first-rate live performance.
* * * * * | Fo’s Picks: ALL GREAT!
1. 12:16 – deep jam over a quiet kalimba pattern; solo fireworks from all
2. 10:50 – fiery sax drills into splashy drum pattern; brash trumpet with effects
3. 13:11 – steady groove: horns in close accord over deep percussion & vox
4. 12:27 – lively rhythm, loose jamming interplay: not too hot, not too cool…
5. 14:03 – Miles Davis’ “All Blues”… gentle, soulful, coolly exotic; bold trumpet
6. 15:12 – catchy groove, “Ornette Coleman” chant, marches towards freedom
