COREY WILKES & ABSTRAKT PULSE: Cries from tha Ghetto
Pi, 2009

POSTMODERN JAZZ – Young trumpet phenom Corey Wilkes plays with the cream of Chicago’s avant scene, from the Art Ensemble to Tortoise. He also has a funky soulful side, as seen on his previous CD (Drop It). This disc is mostly bent modern jazz plus moments of total abstraction. Several tracks end abruptly.

* * * * | Fo’s Picks: 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 12

1. 9:06 – steady pulse: wandering guitar, funky trumpet chatter, angular sax
2. 0:44 – goofy trumpet & drum interlude
3. 6:28 – creaks & whimpers into buzzing drone, becomes low-key noise jazz
4. 7:23 – trumpet blazes above guitar/bass riff, gliding sax, noodly guitar
5. 4:49 – slow, moody ballad: sweet trumpet moan & melancholy guitar
6. 10:53 – steady urban glide, acrid horn solos, guitar at a low boil, tap dance!!
7. 1:13 – free sax & drums interlude
8. 7:44 – starts as bop, drifts into several alternate worlds later on…
9. 1:01 – otherworldly bass & vocal wailing… yow
10. 5:12 – slow, warped ballad: horns slough over shapeless rhythm section
11. 0:25 – interlude: telephone-like electronic tones & bass
12. 4:18 – free-bop sound: horns, guitar chatter & argue over brisk rhythm
