JOE LOVANO Us 5: Folk Art
Blue Note, 2009

MODERN JAZZ – Veteran saxophonist Lovano debuts a two-drum quintet with youthful energy and a willingness to take chances… not playing “out” exactly, but showing plenty of spontaneous, free spirit. The set is full of unusual angles, oddball rhythms and harmonic leaps, keeping the music pleasantly off-balance. Very fresh and worth a listen.

* * * * * | Fo’s Picks: try any track…

1. 4:04 – modern bop, dodges and feints; solos roll but seem slightly off-center
2. 10:05 – nifty repeating riff, sax wanders, calm drum solo, then straight bop
3. 7:17 – slouching ballad over drum patter, oblique & cerebral, energy rises
4. 8:09 – warped bop stroll: complex rhythms, stabbing chords, solos for all
5. 5:46 – tender ballad: piano intro, then meandering and enigmatic
6. 8:30 – great percussion; angular hopping on top… refuses to settle down
7. 6:44 – twin saxes for a cartoonish sound; a perky little bouncing groove
8. 5:52 – quietly exotic: thoughtful sax, introspective bass solo, worldly piano
9. 8:09 – improvisational feel: darting sax lines, rolling drums, firm piano
