FREDDIE HUBBARD: Without a Song
Blue Note, 1969/2009

BOP – The late, great Hubbard is captured in prime form in these live recordings, made December 1969 in England and Germany. All are previously unreleased except for #5. The quartet keeps things loose and gives Hubbard lots and lots of soloing space, which he fills with intense, flaring statements separated by tasteful pauses. Don’t miss #6!

Freddie Hubbard - trumpet
Roland Hanna - piano
Ron Carter - bass
Louis Hayes - drums

* * * * * | Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 6

1. 11:05 – upbeat bop: trumpet solo gets hot, cool piano solo, drums all over it
2. 11:23 – soft ballad: muted trumpet still packs a heavy punch, quirky piano
3. 10:36 – bop blowout: piano runs & leaps, blazing trumpet, wild drum solo
4. 09:47 – solid! uptempo, catchy theme: band is tight, trumpet digs right in
5. 10:08 – ballad: the band messes around with it a bit, trumpet off-mike a lot
6. 12:07 – edgy postbop!: fast/slow/fast, great drums, spacey piano, hot horn
7. 04:38 – bright uptempo, rolls like a freight train, drum solo takes up a lot of it
