ARTHUR KELL QUARTET: Victoria
BJU, 2009

MODERN JAZZ – Bassist with a fine quartet of inventive players well attuned to each other, recorded live (with excellent sound) at two gigs in Germany. Kell’s compositions are brainy yet inviting, his lines crisp with a gently bouncing quality. Loren Stillman’s nimble sax makes the music soar and Brad Shepik adds slight angularity on guitar. Joe Smith provides a solid anchor with lively, textured drumming. Just beautiful!

* * * * * | All very good! Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 6

1. 8:21 – sunny theme, somewhat shaded: modernist solos, warm and lilting
2. 8:45 – upbeat & catchy in an oblique way; another nice round of solos
3. 12:10 – African flavor, welcoming feel; groove strengthens for sinuous solos
4. 10:09 – warm spiral melody, sax & guitar solos unspool in meandering lines
5. 10:09 – slow, atmospheric: poetic solos drift over wide-open rhythmic space
6. 9:26 – cute melody in a serious wrapper; flows well, solos sparkle with life
7. 7:20 – bright bounce, follows a straight line down a narrow path
