LOUIS HAYES: The Time Keeper
18th & Vine, 2009

HARD BOP – Veteran drummer Hayes comes out swinging on this quartet/quintet date, leading a friendly-sounding band from the bottom up. The mix tilts heavily towards drums and piano, putting the focus on Hayes’ steady patterns and making some tracks feel claustrophobic, even rigid. But saxophonist Abraham Burton and vibraphonist Steve Nelson vibes add some welcome air. Not great, but it has its moments.

* * * | Fo’s Picks: 2, 6, 8, 9

1. 3:13 – solid swinging: simple theme, throaty sax trades off with drums
2. 6:22 – upbeat: prominent drums push swinging sax & strolling piano
3. 4:51 – relaxed club sound: lyrical vibes, light latin rhythm, bowed bass solo
4. 5:22 – smiling gospel-tinged good time march; happy solos all around
5. 4:57 – uptempo and straightahead: sax leads, loose solos keep it hopping
6. 6:42 – happy melody over speedy spiral; dense but joyous, nice work
7. 4:21 – ballad with elastic tempo: warm piano, heartfelt sax, busy drums
8. 7:10 – quick take on bossa nova classic; happy bassline & bright solos
9. 7:30 – sped-up ballad, noir-ish melody, burning solos
