SON DE MADERA: Son de Mi Tierra Smithsonian Folkways, 2009 MEXICO – Lively, proud son jarocho from Veracruz, a guitar-heavy traditional form in that has had several resurgences over the past century. Most tracks are in rolling 6/8 time with forceful (almost shouted) duo vocals and delicately picked instrumental solos. But while the songs mostly follow the same general script, there’s actually a lot of variety here. This is excellent stuff! * * * * * | Try any track! Fo’s Picks: 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12 1. 5:46 – churning guitar rhythm 2. 3:42 – happy, skips lightly 3. 3:10 – loud vox, freewheeling 4. 1:37 – harpsichord! a gentle sway 5. 6:22 – strong harp, great vocals! 6. 5:03 – rolling, with harmonica 7. 2:55 – musical flair & big vocals 8. 3:52 – a flowing, sexy fandango 9. 3:59 – gliding, welcoming sound 10. 2:45 – you already know this one 11. 5:17 – harpsichord & harmonica! 12. 4:01 – nifty sound, tricky playing 13. 3:33 – lovely solo guitarra [ Fo ] 07/26/09 |
