ALVIN QUEEN: Mighty Long Way
Justin Time, 2009

SOUL-JAZZ / HARDBOP – Drummer Alvin Queen is one of those guys who’s had a long, rich career, playing with many jazz greats and releasing his own stuff, yet remains way below the radar. This is a solid session, kind of a throwback, with Queen bashing away merrily as a band of first-call NYC sidemen serves it straight-up ‘n’ piping hot. Trumpeter Terell Stafford is a standout, and B3 organ adds grease. Go!

* * * * * | Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10

1. 5:25 – happy soul-jazz with a rocking, gospel flavor
2. 7:50 – crisp, rolling hardbop: speedy sax, agile trumpet, grooving organ
3. 6:29 – cool drum roll on this perky tune, but it isn’t a comfortable fit
4. 7:49 – laid back sexy blooz… slinky melody, hot horns, nice bass too
5. 7:45 – good time Ray Charles organ groove, jams like a revival meeting
6. 5:21 – exuberant hardbop march: the trumpet & organ solos burn
7. 6:40 – big drums under hard riff: trumpet flares, guitar glides, drums kick it
8. 4:53 – quick paced: punchy, nimble theme, solos are loose
9. 7:19 – upbeat gospel-jazz with simple melody & a soulful groove
10. 6:25 – hot drum/conga duet! moves through several rhythms...
