Legendary French-Canadian Heavy Metal with a modern sound. VoiVod goes for a very rhythmic, trippy modern hard rock/metal sound. It’s a “grower” but it definitely pays off. This marks the last recording of guitarist/songwriter Dennis “Piggy” D’Amour (R.I.P.). This also continues the inclusion of Jason Newstead (Metallica, Flotsam + Jetsam). Overall, it’s a good one and sounds definitive of VoiVod’s ability to expand upon just rockin’ & riffin’.
(((((1))))) Straight ahead simple & repetitive hard rocker then 2nd half (@ 2:14) runs at a rippin’ Motorhead styled speed. “Came to rock n’ roll/came to steal yer souls!”
((((2)))) Bassy and more (!?) Lemmy-ish vocals with some good drumming & bass. Great guitar wails from Piggy. Odd chorus.
(((3)))) Very early 90’s, oddly “grungey” and clunky. Though the musicianship is tight enough to keep it afloat.
((((4)))) Mid-pace, bright guitar sound, big bass, rockin’. Lots of “typical VoiVodi-an” lyrics about our bleak present and possible future.
((((5)))) Sci-fi ambient intro, slow sludgy rock tempo with some cool drum fills & bass work. Would’ve fit well on their “Nothingface” album.
((((6)))) Catchy, moody, strummy hard rock into faster pace modern metal with a great vocals performance from Snake. Sorta like VoiVod mixing with a 90’s band like Failure or Chokebore.
(((((7))))) Great guitar tone, swingin’ & swaggery tempo with topical lyrics about modern day pirates.
(((((8))))) (FCC “SHIT” sung once) More sorta grungy metal, kinda fast with a Nirvana-like chorus (in the best way possible, not a direct rip off). “Your filling my head with krap in my head.”
((((9)))) Laid back, bassy, with the usual VoiVod obsession of space & technology. Nice warm guitar sound & more good bass from Mr. Newstead.
(((10))) Jumpy tempo, a little too redundant and again weirdly grungy.
(((11))) Slow, thudding with huge false stops/starts then slowly spiraling downward. Pretty tempo change around 3:12.
((((12)))) Spacey ambient intro, somewhat aggressive tempo & vocals. More solid bass/drum playing & sharp tones from the late, great Piggy.
((((((((13)))))))) Another space intro, then fast & rippin’ but also catchy & melodic. A good book end to their 80’s tune “Tornado”. Weirdly sounds like a stripped down Megadeth crossed with Motorhead. Awesome!
