DAVE HOLLAND / MONTEREY QUARTET: Live at the 2007 MJF
MJF, 2009
MODERN JAZZ – This all-star quartet, led by bassist Dave Holland, was assembled for the 50th annual Monterey Jazz Festival. Pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba is the wild card here, since Holland has worked frequently with Chris Potter and Eric Harland in his regular groups. But it all comes together very nicely. Thoughtful, eloquent postbop; all original material – each member of the band contributed two tunes.
Dave Holland - bass
Gonzalo Rubalcaba - piano
Chris Potter - tenor sax
Eric Harland - drums
* * * * | All pretty good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 6, 7, 9
1. 07:46 – striding theme into an open flow: inquisitive piano, firm sax
2. 11:36 – cool drums, rolling theme: turns slinky, mysterious, then jumps
3. 05:16 – relaxed tempo, pensive with deep, meandering piano
4. 10:11 – hopping midtempo: insistent sax, chewy bass, propulsive drums
5. 10:34 – serene ballad: exquisite bass intro; tender and honest, rises at end
6. 09:59 – playfully upbeat, goofy rhythm opens up cool piano, sax solos
7. 10:48 – exotic bass intro; slow & winding, gathers strength, rhythm scatters
8. 00:38 – band introduction
9. 11:20 – uptempo, staccato beat: twisting solos for sax, piano; tough drums
