CHRIS PASIN: Detour Ahead
H2O Records, 2009

POSTBOP – Originally recorded back in 1987, this set of mostly original music by trumpeter Pasin has a classic, swaggering attitude and some catchy original tunes. Nothing gets batted out of the park here, but it’s a solid quintet set overall, worth a spin.

Chris Pasin - trumpet
Steve Slagle - saxophones, flute
Benny Green - piano
Rufus Reid - bass
Dannie Richmond - drums

* * * * | Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 6, 7, 8

1. 8:42 – Wayne Shorter-style mystery: assertive soprano sax, solid trumpet
2. 8:48 – slow, serious ballad with propulsive bridge: soulful piano & trumpet
3. 4:18 – speedy, hard-edged postbop burner: trumpet & sax have an attitude
4. 5:57 – nice medium ballad with a warm, cozy, almost spiritual feel
5. 9:47 – uptempo groove: tripping piano, bright trumpet, busy bass solo
6. 5:20 – tough-guy stride: muted trumpet gives it a sneer, soprano sax hops
7. 7:34 – standard: quick, breezy pace; straight-up solos from everybody
8. 9:50 – steady glide with flute, muted trumpet, latin touches from piano
