Prince Far I – Cry Tuff Dub Encounter Chapter 3
Reviewed by Sadie O., 10/10/09
Wild Jamaican/British dub from the 70’s. Reissue of a retrospective, originally recorded in JA and mixed by Adrian Sherwood in London with the Roots Radics/Soul Syndicate playing instruments and the Slits providing occasional backing vocals (track 5). Probably explains dubstep and everything else that’s happened since. Mad!
1. 8:10 ***heartbeat riddim and deep DJ vocals. Strange sound. Some bird calls mid-track, then very slow bubble with burbles. Really seems like two dubs joined by little birdies…
2. 4:33 ***jaunty, slightly downtempo skank with gnarly noisies. Gets weirder and weirder.
3. 4:04 **downtempo skank with whirrs and prominent bassline.
4. 3:43 **very slow dub bubble with flutes and things.
5. 4:17 ***slow, bass-heavy bubble with bits of Slits.
6. 7:45 ***tape rewinding noises, then freakish dub of an oft-used riddim.
7. 4:23 **slow dub bubble.
8. 2:50 ***fuzzy midtempo bubble with bits of DJ vocals at the intro.
