MIKE DiRUBBO: REPERCUSSION
Posi-Tone, 2009

MODERN JAZZ – Alto saxophonist DiRubbo leads an unusual quartet lineup in this straightahead modern-bop date: using vibes rather than piano gives the music a light, loose feel that magnifies the airiness already present in DiRubbo’s lines. I would have preferred a little more “ground,” but there’s some nice stuff here.

Mike DiRubbo - alto sax
Steve Nelson - vibes
Dwayne Burno - bass
Tony Reedus - drums

* * * | Fo’s Picks: 3, 4, 5, 8, 9

1. 6:41 – chugging midtempo groove: sax digs in, vibes swirl, drums churn
2. 5:46 – relaxed, swinging jazz standard: skipping sax, playful vibes
3. 5:21 – uptempo, breezy bop: sax burns a straight line, vibes bounce
4. 3:38 – sunny-day stroll: nice sound from the sax here
5. 7:11 – midtempo glide, catchy groove: sax trills & spins, vibes play it cool
6. 6:31 – slightly dragging midtempo, slinky melody, meandering solos
7. 4:52 – laid back ballad: sax has soul, vibes caress the melody
8. 7:25 – theme feels stiff, but then it glides as soloists prod and tease
9. 7:42 – even-tempered tune; sax & vibes examine it from various angles
