MODERN JAZZ – Very cool, quirky quartet with deep Bay Area roots – the players’ overlapping careers include years of exciting work in the local scene throughout the 1990s (guitarist Charlie Hunter has moved on, but clarinetist Goldberg and drummer Scott Amendola are still based here; trumpeter Ron Miles is from Denver). All have gone far beyond the normal confines of jazz in the past, and it’s interesting to see what strange artifacts they bring back to this context. Good stuff!

1. 5:30 – easy tempo: sneaky short-form melody into loose, jamming solos
2. 6:08 – bar-band-blues groove; cool interplay, especially between horns
3. 7:01 – mysterioso guitar, horns wail & slither: it’s like looking under a rock
4. 9:11 – live: a friendly, oddball glide; excellent clarinet & guitar solos
5. 9:25 – slow walk: everybody has lots to say, and plenty of time to say it
6. 8:07 – live: laid-back stroll adds twisty energy: perky solos, bluesy edge
7. 5:30 – funeral-march intro; slow-chugging space-blues guitar, horns pile on
8. 9:16 – live: low, bubbly groove; cool, undulating solos; gets spacey at end
9. 5:30 – bright, nostalgic intro with overlapping melodies; then a happy march
10. 6:24 – live: slow, exotic creep, puffs up and contracts; bashing drum solo
