CREPUSCULE TRIO: Unveil
Circumvention, 2009
POSTMODERN/AVANT-JAZZ – This sax/bass/drum trio out of LA has a great sound, open and daring but still very accessible, balanced somewhere between the notions of groove and freedom. Sharp-edged sax slices and spins over a tense bass pulse, while varied drums and perc keep it on the move. Cool stuff all around.
Alan Cook - drums/percussion
Ken Kawamura - sax
Anthony Shadduck - bass
* * * * | No duds here. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 3, 4, 8
1. 6:26 – twisty sax roams over steady midtempo pulse; sneaky bass solo
2. 4:00 – free improv: open, spacious, birdlike; picks up a sort of groove
3. 9:21 – dreamlike intro, then furtive sax spirals; becomes quietly knotted up
4. 5:45 – sluggish intro, then moves swiftly with sustained post-bop pressure
5. 2:25 – stuttering monotone bass and scattered percussion
6. 4:57 – winding melody, high sax & sing-song bass, drums pick up & fall off
7. 5:59 – slow, creaky improv: semi-melodic, develops a groove near the end
8. 5:39 – boppish, prodding theme becomes an oblique walk, gets low
9. 1:38 – nifty drum/percussion interlude, atmospheric
10. 5:58 – dragging, nagging sound; grows argumentative, drops into grooves
