NANCY HARMS: In the Indigo self-released, 2009 VOCAL JAZZ – Fine singer out of Minneapolis brings an appealing depth of tone, a distinctive element of achy sultriness (think Julie London or maybe Holly Cole) and some really nice phrasing. She does a couple of poppish crossover tracks that I could personally do without, but boy does she sound great on the straight jazz numbers... * * * * | Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 6, 9, 10 1. 4:21 – late night melancholy: Harms wraps up the melody; trumpet shines 2. 2:52 – upbeat and swinging, trumpet & piano take turns in the spotlight 3. 3:54 – slinky groove, a great example of her style; gets flashy in the middle 4. 2:48 – pretty original tune, delicate sing-song melody, sort of a 1970s feel 5. 4:18 – 1960s Broadway tune, lightly swinging; nice piano break 6. 5:03 – oooh… sweet melancholy ballad; voice nestles in a bass/piano pillow 7. 2:59 – singer/songwriter feel, mopey with guitar & organ 8. 3:36 – lightly spinning crossover-jazz track; trumpet has a bunch to do 9. 4:41 – shimmering blue ballad: sweet whispery vocal, nice nightclub sound 10. 4:38 – new intro makes this standard sound modern; sexy, then swings 11. 2:53 – slow, wistful, aching… soft vocal and pretty piano [ Fo ] 02/21/10 |
