Why are the Swedes so good at pop music? Joel Alme is putting out A Master Of Ceremonies on the wonderful Sincerely Yours label, famous for the likes of ceo and The Tough Alliance. And yes, this is more beautifully chaotic pop. The vocals are off most of the time, but it’s so charming and catchy that you’ll forgive him. Apparently this was Pitchfork’s Puritan Blister’s favorite album of 2008. FCC: Clean Try: 2, 1, 5, 8 1) 3:42 ** Dramatic singer/songwriter spiel. Simple fingerpicked guitar theme and sing-along vocals. 2) 2:32 ** Beautiful upbeat pop as only the Swedes can make it. Like Håkan Hellström attempting to make indie rock, and that’s positive 3) 2:50 Rambling pop with strings for the b-part. 4) 3:31 Slow, waltzing jam. String, and oh-oh vocals 5) 3:04 * Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust era run through the cutesy Swedish pop machinery. Stadium-piano and strings. 6) 2:48 Jens Lekman-like melodramatic vocals with a folk guitar back-drop. 7) 3:09 Minimalistic piano/guitar ballad. 8) 3:01 * Faster feel, lyrics about being on an island. Great guitar/drum interplay. 9) 3:21 The vocals are way off, reverb-drenched. Very loose instrumen-tation for both guitar & drums. |
