STEVE COLEMAN & FIVE ELEMENTS -- "HARVESTING SEMBLANCES AND AFFINITIES" -- Way too improvisational sounding for my taste, even though each song was written to represent or symbolize a specific energy or ritual. New Age jazz buffs probably would appreciate the subtleties.
Best Tracks: 3, 5. -- Sunshine January 2011

1) Attila 02 (Dawning Ritual) -- Dischordant female vocals and "improvisational" horns. Not my favorite style. Song created for "opening energy ritual". 8:36
** 2) Beba -- Good upright bass, drums. Scat-style female vocals. Song written to reflect carnal desires. 5:46
*** 3) Clouds -- Nice trumpet to start. Then low-key bass joins. Better vocals. Song intended to reflect movements of clouds. 7:29
** 4) 060706-2319 (Middle of Water) -- Sax and seemingly wordless vocals. Almost sounds like violin included, but none are listed in credits. Then some dissonant horns. Song honors Cancer astrological sign. Assorted tempo. 14:08
*** 5) Flos Ut Rosa Floruit -- Female vocals, almost like "Ave Maria". Written for a spiritual Latin medieval Christian text, and represents a universal spiritual energy. 6:51
** 6) Attila 04 (Closing Ritual) -- Finally some fun sax and drums. Still too new age for me. More minimal vocals than other tracks. 3:36
7) Vernal Equinox 0400320-0149 (initiation) -- Upbeat. Adversarial horns. Singing sounds full of pain. Scatty instrumentation, sounds like traffic jam. 6:43
