RUDRESH MAHANTHAPPA & BUNKY GREEN: Apex
Pi, 2010
MODERN JAZZ – Two generations of cutting-edge saxophone meet in an all-star setting. Rudresh is a critical favorite, but Green, 75, is a highly influential player who stays largely in the shadows. RM is heard in the left channel, BG in the right, highlighting their dialogue. Jason Moran is a great fit on piano, and the rhythm section just kills. First half is mostly RM compositions, second half mostly BG. Play it all.
Rudresh Mahanthappa, Bunky Green - alto saxophones
Jason Moran - piano
François Moutin - bass
Jack DeJohnette - drums (1,2,9,10)
Damion Reid - drums (3,4,5,6,7,8)
Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9
1. 2:41 – RM sax undulates and bends over ocean waves, great bass work
2. 8:15 – RM & BG play catch: tempo relaxes a bit, twisty solos from everyone
3. 9:30 – saxes converse, heat up over deep, walking groove; piano spins out
4. 9:38 – nice sound here, RM is the only sax: flows, bounces, soars, shouts
5. 3:23 – soft piano leads into smoky ballad; BG romantic longing
6. 7:18 – exotic start into midtempo stroll: BG tumbles & jabs, RM strides
7. 5:50 – thoughtful, waltzing tune: BG is the only sax and has a LOT to say
8. 8:18 – percolating, disjointed: RM drives, piano scribbles, BG pounces
9. 7:28 – easygoing and lyrical, but saxes play with passion
10. 9:13 – serious groove: great bass, saxes hop like mad, piano calms it
note: "hidden" track after end is a cool sax/drum duet, approx. 6 mins long
