It's... the 80s. Again. They're not The Cure, but they think they're The Cure, and in many ways that's sufficient. The Cure sure as hell aren't making viable records anymore. For those of you who live under rocks: Moody Goth-informed New Wave. Gross, is that really The Cure in five words or less? They’re from SoCal. God help us.
RIYL: The Cure.
try: 1, 2, 6, 9
no FCCs
*1. ploddy intro: electric organ + deep strings. supa-goth drums & bass come in, circular electric guitar. mellow, pleasant new wave. sounds like... that 80s song you all know.
*2. more uptempo. blow-out bass and very sticky guitar. cool keyboard effects. a bit of a rocker.
3. beachy go-betweensy acoustic guitar (fast, soft) and supa-mellow 'ooh's.
4. oh dear. aggressively emotional uptempo spanish guitar with spanish lyrics, chorus in english. hard start with upfront vox.
5. fast fingerpicking, tappy hi-hat, beamy electric. milky, plaintive. "i tried to make you love me."
*6. big sweeping sound. uplifting, possibility-laden. "you’re only 21; life has only just begun."
7. slow and mournful. picked guitar and too-upfront vox.
8. starts right in the middle of things. bouncy jagged strum and arpeggiated walky bass. kinda smiths.
*9. kicks off with lone speedy electric loop. mellow, easy. nice bass + guitar counterpoint action. very stretchy chorus.
10. upbeat, sticky guitar. kinda silly rapid power chords. “no mommy please no.”
11. soft start, spacey slow synth + guitar. feelin’ ‘elegia’. some background voiceover noise. mournful and heavy. some adventurous falsetto. sounds like: jeff buckley covering bowie.
