CLAYTON BROTHERS: The New Song and Dance artistShare, 2010 MODERN BOP – Veteran brothers Jeff (sax) and John (bass) Clayton keep things swinging on this disc. All the tunes except #7 are originals, all composed around the concepts of singing or dancing. Terell Stafford is excellent on trumpet as usual, and John’s son Clayton, a rising star himself on piano, adds a dash of soul to the family’s hardbop flavor. Jeff Clayton : alto saxophone, flute John Clayton : bass Terell Stafford : trumpet, flugelhorn Gerald Clayton : piano Obed Calvaire : drums Fo’s Picks: 2, 4, 5, 6, 8 1. 6:39 – alternately flaring and breezy: bright trumpet, gritty sax, soulful piano 2. 7:28 – tango, but with a sly soul twist: relaxed solos keep it cool & slinky 3. 11:53 – long, episodic tune with hints of hip-hop/r&b, rising & falling tension 4. 8:06 – sweet, flowing ballad: flugelhorn is gracefully eloquent, piano rises 5. 6:38 – upbeat hardbop, hard swinging rhythm tempered by gentler breaks 6. 9:21 – fun, hip-wiggling swinger with hoppin’ solo breaks for all 7. 5:05 – Stevie Wonder tune as gentle chamber music… with a blues break 8. 7:33 – relaxed, sneaky slide… very bluesy round of strolling solos 9. 6:02 – happy, strutting tune, a quirky groove suggestive of New Orleans [ Fo ] 10/23/10 | ||
