Andy S Reviewed 2011-05-16 | ||
Really well done, straightforward rock n roll led by the Dream Syndicate's frontman. Draws in a lot of Paisley Underground and classic psychedelic rock, but also Tom Petty (especially in the vox). RIYL anything the Wynn/Buck/McCaughey/Hitchcock camp has been up to lately, i.e. R.E.M., Baseball Project, Minus 5, Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus 3; also newer Meat Puppets. All tracks are good. FCC on 2. –Andy **1 - quiet start; paced, driving guitar rock, loudly dissonant finish *2 - FCC "shit"; uptempo and rockin, with spoken-sung vox 3 - minor key power pop (R.E.M.) with well placed strings; murky sound on verse, crisp on chorus 4 - drowned Dylan vox over late-night electric piano groove; cool weird guitar solo *5 - determined midtempo with new-era R.E.M. instrumentation *6 - slow, sad, smoky, simple *7 - nice feel-good jangle-pop 8 - expansive minor-key power-pop, more production cheese than most *9 - Barlow-esque pop ballad over e. piano, clean guitar 10 - big, fast guitar-rock; no vox until halfway through *11 - almost Pavement-y fun pop, more talky vox |
