THE BLACK BUTTERFLIES: 1 De Mayo
self-released, 2010

WORLD JAZZ – Unusual, very eclectic band led by Mercedes Figueras, a 27-year old Argentinean saxophonist with a concentrated, somewhat sour sound. Things get interesting when Figueras plays off the avant-minded sax of Tony Larokko, the two of them taking flight with abandon over locked global grooves. The recording has an unpolished feel, but it gets under the skin after a while. Cool stuff.

Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4 (maybe 5)

1. 11:44 – mellow Latin rhythm: pungent sax solo skews it in an odd direction, keyboard rhapsodizes and bass chills
2. 11:32 – busy, avant-leaning sax interplay, falls into a strong groove, much squeaking and squealing over locomotive rhythm
3. 9:31 – thick percussion fills up a sassy little swinger, solos bring the blues
4. 6:11 – upbeat & offbeat: great bouncy percussion, fun avant-leaning sax
5. 16:52 – roams through some very cool global atmosphere… settles into kecak-style male chanting under Spanish fem vocal, then builds that rhythm into an energetic instrumental groove. Nice!
6. 7:40 – relaxed soulful march, a gospel touch, expressive sax, mellow keys
