NOAH PREMINGER: Before the Rain Palmetto, 2011 MODERN JAZZ – Nobody expects an all-ballad CD from a 24-year-old saxophonist, but these are no ordinary ballads. Yes, Preminger is a very lyrical player, and there are plenty of slow tempos. But there’s also some really daring and adventurous music, pitting Preminger’s beautifully emotional sound against an avant-garde stance led by Matt Wilson’s pressure-cooker drums. This is rock-solid, very modern stuff.
