NOAH PREMINGER: Before the Rain
Palmetto, 2011

MODERN JAZZ – Nobody expects an all-ballad CD from a 24-year-old saxophonist, but these are no ordinary ballads. Yes, Preminger is a very lyrical player, and there are plenty of slow tempos. But there’s also some really daring and adventurous music, pitting Preminger’s beautifully emotional sound against an avant-garde stance led by Matt Wilson’s pressure-cooker drums. This is rock-solid, very modern stuff.

Noah Preminger : tenor saxophone
Frank Kimbrough : piano
John Hébert : bass
Matt Wilson : drums

Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 5, 7, 8

1. 2:18 – very pretty standard, suffused with melancholy
2. 6:59 – sprawling, scattered rhythms: flirts with avant-garde, strong solos
3. 8:26 – calm contemplation: gently stoic, sax floats up high … gorgeous
4. 6:43 – freeform drums vs. slow melody; cerebral solos vs. rhythmic drive
5. 6:04 – standard ballad, played straight… a lovely after-hours feel
6. 2:33 – forceful, urgent drums grate against slow, moody melody
7. 5:00 – Ornette Coleman tune, shows off the band’s oddball blend very well
8. 8:27 – lyrical & melancholy: delicate interplay, soaring solos, sturdy drums
9. 3:51 – very slow, aching melody; moves in a graceful arc
