mr. esq. Reviewed 2011-02-27 | ||
as reviewed by mr. esq. 'modern rock'/alterna-contempo. in nutshell: vox sound like david byrne trying to sound like nick cave trying to channel springsteen&bono. same w/music. yeah, it's kitschy, but it's so damn good. from edinburgh, scotland. this is 2nd album. produced by guy that produced mogwai. FCC CLEAN. RIYL: u2, springsteen, nick cave, the national, killers. SUGGESTIONS: 1, 3, 4, 5, 7. 8, 10. *1. afro-tribal drums start. very processed sound. vox like david byrne. moving 'modern rock' song. 2. faster. the mood is maudlin, doomy. damn good u2 kitsch. *3. BEST TRACK: sad ballad. fem&mal duet. very nick cave. beautiful. *4. saddy. neo-ambient. it's epic, baby! *5. uptemp, a song in search of a john hughes film. 6. this is really reaching for the heartstrings. (maudlin as all fuck=FUCK THIS TRACK.) *7. ALMOST THE ALMOST BEST TRACK; this is another sad, overdramatic reading, but it's fucking beautiful. very springsteen. *8. driving! it's 'the rocker.'... 9. sad to uptempo: it's 'the message song.' *10. ALMOST BEST TRACK: yes, there is hope. beautiful lullaby. |
