GREG RUBY QUARTET: Look Both Ways
self-released, 2010

GYPSY JAZZ – Straight up swingin’ in the Django Reinhardt/Hot Club vein, but these are all original compositions by Greg Ruby, a top guitarist out of Seattle. Also on hand are violinist Evan Price (familiar from the Hot Club of San Francisco) and Bay Area guitarist Doug Martin (leader of the Avatar Ensemble). Oh yes, there’s still plenty of life in this toe-tapping genre. Enjoy!

No duds here. Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 5, 8

1. 4:24 – jaunty midtempo bounce
2. 3:23 – toe-tapping beat, singing violin
3. 3:33 – uptempo: bold, slashing stride
4. 4:41 – sexy tango with a sweet center
5. 4:29 – a beautiful, enigmatic sway
6. 2:51 – musette-waltz with accordion
7. 4:30 – a slow, bittersweet ballad
8. 3:51 – snappy little swinger, fine solos
9. 2:09 – slow, sadly romantic
10. 2:28 – dragging café waltz
11. 3:46 – chunky midtempo swing
12. 3:54 – soft reflection with accordion
