JONATHAN KREISBERG: Shadowless
New for Now, 2011
CONTEMPORARY JAZZ – This dynamic quintet has a fusion-derived sound, but only the guitar is electric, making for a more organic, tradition-based feel. Mixes rock-tinged wailing solos and light, arcing melodicism in agile grooves. Kreisberg’s guitar work is very nimble, and he likes to mix up both the mood and his own effects from track to track. The solid band, with Will Vinson on sax, keeps pace with ease.
Jonathan Kreisberg : guitar
Will Vinson : saxophone
Henry Hey : piano
Matt Penman : bass
Mark Ferber : drums
Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 8
1. 7:57 – uptempo, jabs and dodges: guitar solo scurries, sax cools & heats up
2. 5:50 – hot space groove, cool drum beat: sax rocks, then guitar in orbit
3. 5:47 – gliding guitar/piano duet: moves swiftly at first, relaxes in second half
4. 7:07 – traditional Greek melodies wind sinuously; switches to a quick burn
5. 7:04 – slow, no piano: falls back to gentle sax/guitar duet, then a trio ballad
6. 8:40 – uptempo strut: twangy guitar flies, sax gets down; hard-edged ending
7. 3:27 – slow, floating melody: piano/bass hold the center as others drift
8. 8:26 – grooving standard, the most straightahead track; bass & drum solos
