TERELL STAFFORD: This Side of Strayhorn
MaxJazz, 2011

MAINSTREAM JAZZ – Billy Strayhorn tunes performed by one of the best bop trumpeters around and his ace working quintet. There’s a good mix of famous and lesser-known material here, and everybody sounds very comfortable and in fine form. Straight up and swingin’. What’s not to like?
All excellent! Try any track.

Terell Stafford : trumpet, flugelhorn
Tim Warfield : tenor & soprano sax
Bruce Barth : piano
Peter Washington : bass
Dana Hall : drums

1. 7:56 – a happy swinger, everybody solos: trumpet is hot & sax pulls like taffy
2. 8:58 – warm-breeze melody & light latin groove: sax & trumpet really sing. Nice!
3. 7:20 – relaxed ballad sway, easygoing and oh so gentle with feel-good solos
4. 7:44 – very sophisticated after-hours ballad with flugelhorn, just perfectly done
5. 8:43 – growling trumpet blues: a mix of Harlem grit and swanky elegance
6. 7:10 – gliding midtempo swing: trumpet stands tall, sax & piano stroll merrily
7. 8:20 – easy tempo, slinky and bluesy: trumpet digs in, nice sax & piano too
8. 7:06 – nice duet: sweet flugelhorn & gentle piano float up to the sky
9. 6:31 – bop burner with rhythmic quirks, hard drums, soprano sax, hot solos
