Obits / Moody, Standard, and Poor / Sub Pop Records / 2011
Youthful and alive punk (with touches of surfer/alternative/indie rock). These guys are new (first single in 2008). It’s got all the usual electric guitar solos preceded by soulful shouting vocals, really stuff for young thrashing and howling. The kind of band you always wanted to be in as a teen but never grew the right hair for it (nor had the skateboarding skills). Emotional, fun, and grungy, but the songs tend to resemble after some time.
Similar to the Stooges, Black Lips vibe, Jet, maybe Misfits too
Favorites: 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9
FCC - 6, 11
1:* You Gotta Lose (3:29) - Starts quick into a surfer-punk feel, with choruses accompanied by the drumming low chord (“wipeout” style), but a perfectly punk vocalist Very catchy and engaging.
2.* “I Want Results” (3:31) - Voice and guitar reminds me of Jet’s “Are You Gonna Be My Girl, but more hardrock and sincere
3.* “Everything Looks Better In the Sun” (3:28) - Has a sort of punk western-flick guitar, very neat, song about how his gal looks better in day-light. All good fun
4. “Killer” (2:35) - Pretty climactic, maybe something for shredding skateboarders, good vocals to the rocking guitar
5.* “Shift Operator” (3:30) - This one’s good. Slower, with punkish disuptions, howling “Are you reboooorn”.
“No Fly List” (2:35) - Fast angry punks! FCC
7.* “Naked to the World” (2:28) - Pure surfer punk, hard to not move to. Exhibitionist love...
“Spot the Pikey” (1:37) - This one’s short and strong, instrumentals, interrupted only for a moment at halfway
* “New August” (3:40) - Instrumental rock out for first 1:30, followed by some epic punk vocals
“Standards” (2:22) - Frustrated youths in love I’d say!
“Beggin’ Dogs” (2:42) - USA thrash. FCC
“I Blame Myself” (3:11) - Electric guitar with thrashing drums, imagine a preamble to a late-night rebellion, building up with each leather-coated character walking in the foggy streets, and finally erupting at 1:30 with a riot. Instrumental thrash.
