Young Legionnaire / “Crisis Works” / Wichita Recordings
London based trio lead by Gordon Moakes, bassist/backup singer of Bloc Party. Male vocals mid range, though often yelled, albeit occasionally melodically. Most songs consist of an uptempo beat, distorted guitars, and either yelled/strained vocals or that midrange emotional whiny British guy sound. Not saying that’s bad. It’s strange, some songs have these nice melodies/riffs embedded throughout, that for me get a little lost in the oft-frenetic sound, and frequent melody/beat changes. Still a solid record, they have a strong sound that’s a nice change from the usual indie rock. Nice use of heavy guitars and the occasional solo.
No FCCs detected.
Favorite tracks: 4, 5, 6, 9
1. 3:20 Frenetic fast tempo, heavy distorted guitar riff, yelled vocals, occasional scream. Thick guitars reminiscent of hard 90s rock, a la Pantera.
2. 3:21 Slight discordant sound, melodic harmonized vocals in chorus, guitar solo.
3. 5:16 Mid, super distorted plodding guitar, becomes sort of melodic/toe-tapping... heavily. Drags a bit though.
4. *3:50 Spoken voice in beginning, uptempo, cool chorus high/low vocals, a bit of a frantic sound on guitar and vocals. Kinda cool though.
5. *3:29 Uptempo, nice short motif/melody that gets repeated, awesome distorted guitar solo at end.
6. *4:44 Starts slow, picks up midtempo, rolling drums, vocals a bit emo, nice guitar melody at 3:20. Pretty solid throughout.
7. 3:31 Straightforward rock, uptempo melody, nice harmonies on chorus.
8. 3:23 Vocals sound a bit strained on this one, repetitive guitar, background male harmonies in chorus.
9. *3:50 Mid-uptempo, distorted guitars, chorus is quite catchy despite a nondescript verse. Last 30 seconds random acoustic resounding piano??
10. 3:32 Harsh sounding guitar chords, reminiscent of a punk band that would get radio play and no indie cred.
11. 3:07 The usual, distorted guitars, mid-uptempo. Many different melodies, not too cohesive. Spoken thoughts on sex and death at end.
12. 3:26 Uptempo, distorted guitars, two male voices occasionally, kind of catchy at times, but not much.
