COLIN VALLON TRIO: Rruga
ECM, 2011
MODERN JAZZ – This deep Swiss trio is all about melody and feeling rather than solo acrobatics. Their tunes are compact, intimate, intricate and beautiful, growing from simple beginnings to firm declarations or deep introspection. Other bands might need 15 minutes to develop these tunes, but Vallon goes straight to the heart. Very fine music.
Colin Vallon : piano
Patrice Moret : bass
Samuel Rohrer : drums
All good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 6, 8, 9
1. 5:05 – calm pulse, gently curved melody repeats with rising energy
2. 4:33 – piano spirals & atmospheric drums surround aching, bittersweet tune
3. 4:08 – slow, serene: sad piano wrapped in brushed drums & spare bass
4. 6:51 – slow intro… silence… then a sparkling drive with questing piano
5. 4:53 – dark atmosphere: creaky bass, haunted piano, scattered cymbals
6. 5:07 – sounds like a Balkan folk song: nudges forward, then gets ethereal
7. 2:50 – mysterious clockwork, briefly finds a pretty tune, then scatters
8. 5:07 – warm & optimistic: a lovely melody drifts over steady midtempo pulse
9. 6:31 – same as #2 but more dynamic, with emphasis on the loping rhythm
10. 4:00 – quiet drums; trio tiptoes between swirling brushes
11. 4:47 – trio falls in together around moody bass; improvisational sound
