SEAN JONES: No Need for Words
Mack Avenue, 2011

MAINSTREAM JAZZ – Trumpeter Sean Jones sounds invigorated on this fresh, lively set, easily among his best to date. The band (a quintet on most tracks) has real jump on the uptempo numbers and warm soulfulness in the ballads, both setting Jones’ sharply articulated but gruff-edged trumpet lines in a perfect light. Good stuff from the center.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 5

1. 7:12 – bright, energetic neo-bop: piano & sax drive, trumpet sings
2. 7:27 – solid groover with Latin percussion and softer, ballad-like diversions
3. 7:09 – a sweetly soulful ballad for mom: warm ensemble, loving solos
4. 6:09 – snappy tune: prominent drums in tricky intro, then a streamlined glide
5. 6:52 – achingly slow ballad: muted trumpet and calm piano drift gently
6. 8:03 – midtempo, with a ballad feel and some declarative interludes
7. 5:29 – unusual fusion stride: heavy percussion thump, guitar, blaring horns
8. 7:58 – uplifting gospel ballad, softly swaying with organ, stands tall
