Very non-musical sound collages, based around scraping sounds that vary from buzzy to clackety to nearly voicelike. Each track pairs guests with two versions of the skatchbox, a homemade instrument played with combs rubbed against bumpy surfaces. (If you've rubbed a comb against the edge of a desk - it's like that). Lots of growling, scraped sounds, coupled with some recording effects and different guest instruments or vocals, some more musical (2,4,7), some less (6). Good for fans of noise or any time you want to weird out your listeners.
Each track includes Tom Nunn and David Michalak on skatchboxes, plus local friends listed in parentheses.
- Various scratching noises
- Vocalized wordplay and goofing around. Funny, w/operatic singing too. (Aurora)
- Ringing sounds, near-vocal groans (Gino Robair)
- Choppy sax (Bruce Ackley)
- Nonsense vocals: giggles and ghost sounds (Bob Marsh)
- Spacey tweedly electronics, a good complement to the skatchboxes (Tim Perkis)
- With cello: starts weeping, gets spritely (Doug Carroll)
- Airy yes/no vocals, kind of cute, still very experimental (Aurora)
- Piano: Slow, probing (Scott Looney)
- Oboe: high, keening, sounds like part of the skatch sounds, actually (Kyle Bruckmann)
- Nonsense vocals, like a lecture in another language (Ron Heglin)
- Deep metallic rumbling. Industrial. (Jacob Felix Huele)
- Cartoony deep voice (Bob Marsh)
- Cello again, sharp and reverb'ed. (Doug Carroll)
- A sound like a marble rolling on wood, then whispery noises. Long oboe-like tones. (Kyle Bruckmann)
