MELVIN JONES: Pivot
Turnaround, 2011
MAINSTREAM JAZZ – This is the debut release as a leader for Melvin Jones, an established ensemble trumpeter and educator. And it’s a good one, with crisp performances and terse but effective solos, in short tunes that get to the point and don’t stray. Conventional but solid.
Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11
1. 4:21 – bright, muscular groove: short but very hot solos from all
2. 5:19 – relaxed soul with gospel flavor, passionate horn dialogue near end
3. 6:11 – cool Wayne Shorter-ish postbop: soloists stroll through dreamscape
4. 4:47 – burning bop workout: solos all around, trumpet & drums tear it up
5. 6:22 – nice little midtempo groove: slight latin tinge, murmuring bass solo
6. 4:59 – ’70s soul favor & samba rhythm under an easygoing swing
7. 4:32 – tricky accelerations and stops, settles down for solos, rolls at the end
8. 4:52 – relaxed soulful ballad: piano and flugelhorn are tender, heartfelt
9. 4:28 – upbeat, snappy neo-bop: trumpet & sax swagger, piano skips
10. 6:26 – slow and smoky: muted trumpet has a lot to say, moody bass
11. 5:08 – upbeat shuffle: trombone works it, sax & trumpet strut, hip bass
12. 4:28 – oddball tune: sneaky groove, chillout breaks, sudden stops & starts
13. 1:22 – reflective trumpet/piano duet
