Fun, witty, deliberately retro alt-country-rock (or call it rockabilly) from this Atlanta-based trio. All 3 members play guitar & sing; one doubles up on bass. Barton Caplan is lead singer & songwriter. Three different guests provide drumming. Add keyboards on a few tracks, pedal steel guitar on two. Many tracks sound to me like Justin Townes Earle; others have some Gram Parsons or other influences. Very enjoyable debut album, start to finish. FCC issues in tracks 1 and 10 ) 1 * FCC (fucking). Mid-fast. Good country-rock. Telling-off-the-girlfriend. (2:27) 2 *** Mid-fast. Fun cosmic country sound: twangy lead vocal & guitar; good male harmonies. An optimistic & upbeat courting song. (3:27) 3 * Fast country-rock. Good lead and rhythm guitars; sweet lyrics. (3:26) 4 ** Slightly melancholy love song with ironic lyrics. Great twangy lead vocal. Terrific pedal steel. (Wait for the quiet acoustic guitar fade-out at the end.) (3:26) 5 ** Fast. Lonely song sung to a river. Sounds much like Justin Townes Earl. (3:01) 6 * Campy and old-timey. Flirty lyric. Singing very much like Justin Townes Earl. (2:07) 7 ** Fast. The hardest, rockin’est song by far. References to Dylan, Jack White & Jimi. (2:27) 8 Fast. Novelty song with cutesy lyrics. A bit goofy like Ray Stevens. (2:15) 9 ** Mid-tempo, calypso sway. Lovers are perfect for each other but can’t get along. (3:50) 10 FCC (shit & fucker). Super fast. Almost a punk feel. I am so over you! (2:06) 11 * Mid-tempo. Hilarious. Another tell-her-off song. Bit of Beach Boys harmony. (3:52) 12 *** Mid-tempo. Very fun, tongue-in-cheek love song. Faux-shitkicker: they really lay on the country sound. Cute lyrics mention some county-music icons. Pedal steel lead. (3:26) 13 Fast swaying 6/8. Cute farewell song from band to audience. Ridiculous rhymes. (2:15) |
