JANE BUNNETT & HILARIO DURAN: Cuban Rhapsody
Alma, 2011

CUBAN JAZZ – Lovely old-fashioned duets by pianist Duran and flutist Bunnett, who also plays soprano sax on a few tracks. The material goes way back and has a strong classical influence, so this is more about beautiful melody and gentle interplay than improvisation, but there’s lots of personality and good humor too.

Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 10

1. 5:32 – gently romantic with sax; beautiful piano flow, picks up later
2. 4:56 – bright, perky and playful: rolls along with flair
3. 5:04 – soft and melancholy, with a warm nostalgia woven in
4. 3:07 – friendly upbeat bounce with a couple of quiet moments
5. 8:47 – five dances, all very dignified and graceful
6. 3:47 – nostalgic, sax picks up piercing sharpness as it goes
7. 5:59 – a happy glide, slides into a cute little wiggle… lots of fun
8. 4:33 – original tune: a more modern sound with interesting angles
9. 5:18 – happy, sweeping/skipping feel; surprise vocal refrain
10. 3:52 – a really nice, warm sound; maybe the most appealing sax track
