The Pebbles – First Album Reviewed by Sadie O., 7/8/11 Reissue of a 1997 garage-rock girl group rave-up from Japan. Sounds like it was recorded in one take in a bathroom, which is just how we like it. So endearing! 1. 1:51 ***bit of spoken intro, very garage-y uptempo garage rock instrumental with screams. 2. 1:44 ***uptempo rockabilly-ish twist-a-gogo. 3. 2:06 ***squeeee! Garage rock with maybe a touch of Blondie. 4. 3:18 ***slow stroll with incomprehensible adenoidal vocals. 5. 2:18 ***boppy upbeat frug, complete with white gogo boots. 6. 2:09 ***girly-girl happiness, sugar pops and pigtails. 7. 2:23 **slow, rather off-key pop love song. Rather nice guitar solo. 8. 2:18 ****upbeat cover with heavy bass, and an extra syllable in “Diddley”. Upgrade! 9. 3:20 ***a bit Animals-istic bassline, Waitresses-y vocals. Seems like someone’s channeling Lou Reed near the end, too. 10. 2:42 ***they really DO love the Beatles! Painfully so. 11. 2:40 ***twangy guitar, uptempo, slightly psychedelic-ish. 12. 0:52 ** little live bluesy bit with drunk audience noises. 13. 2:11 ****uptempo, almost competent cover of a Link Wray chicken-scratch instrumental. Great bass slide. Rubbery! 14. 1:49 ****kinda sexy (!) midtempo strut. Pretty sure this was a Link Wray number, too. They can pick em! Oooh, screamy! |
