DR. MICHAEL WHITE: Adventures in New Orleans Jazz, Part 1
Basin Street, 2011
TRADITIONAL JAZZ – Another fine outing from this clarinet master, taking the broad view with Africa, the Caribbean and pop covers joining the standard second-line grooves and blues tunes. Well done.
Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 13
1. 5:36 – African groove intro with balafon; bounces into an upbeat N.O. walk
2. 4:50 – relaxed old-school blues shuffle, nice wailin’ vocal & clarinet
3. 6:06 – a seamless, wonderfully sunny mix of two South African hit songs
4. 5:51 – classic, lazy tune: fun, gruff vocal; nice clarinet/trumpet dialogue
5. 4:50 – Bob Marley as a trad-jazz instrumental?! It actually works…
6. 5:36 – clarinet really wails on this slow blues classic; nice banjo solo too
7. 4:48 – old-fashioned saloon blues, sassy vocal, naughty (but clean) lyrics
8. 2:50 – upbeat little rag, a very pleasant bounce
9. 7:08 – fast drums and sinister bass, switches to relaxed calypso-like sound
10. 4:07 – oooh… a nice slinky blues with a surprise tango break mixed in
11. 5:40 – gospel: starts as slow duet w/piano; switches to an upbeat bounce
12. 3:57 – slow old spiritual: solo clarinet moans and wails
13. 6:18 – Paul Simon tune fits right in: relaxed pace at first, picks up
