Hiltzik, S. / Tributaries (E. Christova, pianist) Label: Night Sky Music Larry K. Reviewed 2011-08-07 SCOTT HILTZIK: Tributaries (performed by E. Christova) Nightsky Music, 2010 Scott Hiltzik has a catalogue of over 600 compositions, many performed by major orchestras; his jazz songs have been recorded by many vocalists. His piano music crosses Romantic period (Chopin, Brahms) with Impressionism (Ravel) and an occasional touch of Prokofiev. He combines classical traditions with elements of jazz, American musical theatre, and some rhythm and blues. The result is easily listenable, interesting music, demanding technical virtuosity in the pianist and using the piano’s ability to be an orchestra of one. “You Can Clap Now” cleverly plays with the question of audience clapping. 1. Dénouement. I. Tempestoso. 5:01 (melodic undulations) 2. Dénouement. II. Beautiful Heartache. 4:55 (tuneful, meandering, emotional) 3. Tributaries. I Moderato. 5:58 (bouncy, kaleidoscopic) 4.
