Mocean Worker – Candygram for Mowo!
Reviewed by Sadie O., 10/23/11
FUNKY club electronica with major big band swing and 70’s soul elements. Music to make you move and make you happy (I guess that’s the link to 30’s Swing – when it’s hard times, what do you do? Rave up and dance!) Mostly instrumentals (track 3 with Lyrics Born is about the only one with lyrics that aren’t really part of the beat. Mostly, it’s about the FUNK. When something just sounds SO DAMN GOOD, I call it Ear Candy, so it’s very fitting that this is a candygram.
1. 3:09 ****uptempo, upbeat 30’s big band swing (think Silly Symphonies), but with boom bip. Instrumental. Good feelie, fa sho.
2. 3:41 ****big horns, chimes and shaker, then midtempo funky strut with great horns… ‘Scuse me – did I say strut? I meant swagger. Yeah, baby.
3. 4:29 ****Mambo, baby! Funky Hip Hop Electronomambo – with Lyrics Born. Oh YEAH!
4. 4:44 ***intro of a guy singing the bass line, then midtempo funky groove with a bit of 30’s swing and another bit of electronic chimes and glitch. Instrumental. Whew!
5. 4:36 ****big-ass 70’s soul funk, bit of Booker T-style keyboard, sweet sway and great stomp. Awesome!
6. 5:05 ***uptempo Jazz/House – bit of vocal is more part of the beat than anything else. There’s about a half dozen decades mixed up in here.
7. 6:03 **cinemascope opening chord devolves into club glitch electronica with lounge flute, midtempo, groovy almost to the point of cheesitude. Bits of spy movie, and that last note from “A Day in the Life”…
8. 4:40 ***spacey electronic woobles, then FUNKY bass, which sets off the pretty chimey things nicely.
9. 4:32 ***half big band swing and half bebop, and all funky/clubby. And VERY cool…
10. 4:32 ****glitch and FUNK. Supercool slightly uptempo strut with a ton of stuff going on.
11. 4:00 ****70’s disco-funk PARTY groove, with a hint of Latin percussion.
12. 3:39 ***sort of slinky and mysterious, yet also uptempo and funky, with a jazzy upright bass sound and lots of percussion.
13. 5:14 **goofy comedy club spoken intro, then midtempo jazz club funk electronica with overwrought strings and tons of other elements, including slow, bluesy singing (what? Dunno – it’s part of the beat.) Fades into strange slowly over the last minute or so, ending with a faint bad comedy club joke and 30 seconds of silence.
14. 1:23 *strange, beatless sound collage. Bit of jazz…
