JACOB FRED JAZZ ODYSSEY: The Race Riot Suite Royal Potato Family, 2011 MODERN JAZZ – JFJO has never been a “safe” band, always looking for new elements to add to their jazz-rock base, but they’ve really moved beyond expectations with this ambitious big-band suite inspired by the bloody Tulsa Race Riots of 1921. They achieve scale with a five-man horn section that includes stars Peter Apfelbaum and Steven Bernstein, and guitarist Chris Combs’ compositions are like an intense blend of Ellington, Mingus, and Dixieland, spiked with free-jazz and country while haunted by angry poltergeists. Impressive! Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 5, 6, 9 1. 2:44 – big surging intro, falls to troubled, turbulent atmosphere 2. 7:12 – all mixed up, with bustling grooves & old-timey cakewalks, country flavor and an ominous edge 3. 5:07 – chaos and high drama, speedy passages and screeching sax breaks 5. 4:50 – a slow dance, sax & piano weave through strange, unsettled chords 6. 5:18 – bold sound, careens drunkenly back and forth with a heavy tread 8. 4:16 – brash, agitated stomp on the edge of violence; open improv in middle 9. 3:33 – twisted carnival, slides into a quick tunneling sound, tons of energy 11. 7:34 – optimistic melodies struggle to emerge from the anguished darkness Tracks 4,7,10,12 are brief, improvised interludes. 12 cuts off abruptly.
