JOHN COLIANNI QUINTET: On Target
Patuxent, 2011

SWING/BOP – Oh man, this is excellent: Jubilant swing and bouncy bop from a fleet-fingered pianist and his two-guitar quintet. The tunes are short – nothing over 4 minutes – but they’re just bursting with tasty little surprises: crazy piano twists and humorous asides abound. It’s reminiscent of classic Oscar Peterson, but you can hear lots of other stuff in here too: the King Cole Trio, Count Basie, Fats Waller... On target indeed: this is classic jazz done right.

All good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 11, 14

1. 2:38 – uptempo swinging romp
2. 2:23 – solo piano ballad, tender
3. 2:14 – FAST swing, fun breaks
4. 4:06 – catchy! nifty walking riffs
5. 3:43 – jive blues with vocal refrain
6. 3:56 – upbeat stroll, nice guitar
7. 2:33 – snappy blues, happy solos
8. 2:55 – speedy bebop, gets twisty
9. 2:24 – tango for solo piano
10. 3:29 – cute cool-cat swing
11. 3:03 – jumpin’ swing-blues
12. 1:54 – happy bounce, fast & fun
13. 3:20 – solo piano ballad, sweet
14. 3:13 – speedy finale, really flies
