CHICK COREA & STEFANO BOLLANI: Orvieto ECM, 2011 MODERN JAZZ – Piano duets, recorded live at the Umbria Jazz Festival in 2010. Corea and Bollani, a very fine Italian player, make an elegant match in this rather cerebral set, playing an interesting mix of originals, bossa novas, jazz standards, and improvisations. The sound can be as intricate and fragile as spun glass, or flowing in a virtuoso stream. Either way, it’s beautiful music that compels close listening. Try any track. Fo’s Picks: 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11 1. 4:12 – improvisation: delicate interplay emerges from abstract patterns 2. 6:16 – fragile start/end, falls gently into aching bossa melody, lively soloing 3. 4:24 – standard starts out chunky, gets cooking in solos, drifts home 4. 5:42 – perky, quirky Brazilian tune: enters from odd angle, flows in parallel 5. 7:30 – deconstructed standard prances in the snow, gets very playful 6. 6:06 – fractured waltz moves gingerly, poking, prodding and retreating 7. 8:45 – serious improv for 4:00, then slides into jabbing Miles Davis tune 8. 5:44 – gentle A.C. Jobim melody: bright, airy and calm 9. 7:11 – standard: leisurely pace, relatively spare but with embroidered edges 10. 6:51 – hand percussion on piano bodies sets up a light, dancing melody 11. 6:05 – well-known Corea tune in a peppy treatment, really gets rolling 12. 6:05 – straight-up two-piano blues, but with some extra frills [ Fo ] - October 2011 |
