F.A.B. TRIO: History of Jazz in Reverse TUM Records, 2011 FREE JAZZ – Outstanding, grooving improvisations featuring exotic, soulful violin scribblings from the late Billy Bang, pressure-cooker drumming by Barry Altschul and rock-solid bass work from Joe Fonda. They play in and out of the pocket with great urgency and verve: this should grab fans of avant and “normal” jazz equally. The longer tracks fly right by and the shorter ones have amazing depth. Just great stuff! Fo’s Picks: Go for any track. 1. 15:43 – long, turbulent intro, violin has an eastern sound, strong bass solo, second half rolls with an uptempo walking groove, hot drum break 2. 9:49 – 1st half: plucked strings, perc accents; 2nd half: hard striding groove 3. 5:26 – quiet solemnity: drums swirl around sweet, stately violin, calm bass 4. 8:08 – solo drums rise up, then speedy freebop drive; shredding violin solo! 5. 7:09 – so nice: classic Cuban tune gets a wonderful, dreamlike treatment 6. 8:03 – calm trio improv, slides into a nice bluesy walking groove 7. 6:06 – sweet violin weaves delicately through steady pendulum rhythm 8. 5:05 – a marching, second-line feel: serious, jabbing violin, funky bass solo [ Fo ] - October 2011 |
