The Darkest Night Since 1683
Barn Owl / Lost in the Glare / Thrill Jockey Records / 2011|
Formed By Evan Caminiti and Jon Porras in 2006, local to San Fran.
Instrumental, strong and vibrant, very ethereal. Guitars (usually electric in the background), organs, pianos, percussion (in mini explosions), gong, and bass clarinet dispersed in this sort of electronic meditation. Soothing but not to put to sleep - study music. ElectroZen maybe?
Good Alternative/Psychadelic instrumentals, with very well fit titles.
FCC Clean, instrumental.
Favorite - 2 & 5
1: “Pale Star” (4:24) - More clear sound the builds up in drone, then cuts off into a sort of windy angelic background
2*: “Turiya” (4:06) - Steady, strong, gives a good head bob
3: “Devotion I” (5:56)- Starts slow and eerie, transcendental, building up with a religious drone. Very spiritual/trance
4: “The Darkest Night Since 1683” (7:35) - Stars quiet, opens up at 1 min with some synth. A nice electronic meditation feel, as if some robotic tibetan monks were chanting near... a robot beehive. At 4:20, the buzzing quiets out, returns to ethereal noises.
5*: “The Temple Of The Winds” (3:25) - This one if very nice. Neat chimes, with acoustic guitar coming in at 1:20 and other instruments building a more upbeat feel. Very pleasant.
6: “Midnight Tide” (5:16) - Midnight tide is definitely a fitting name, easy to imagine that. Something strong in the background, with low reverberations, yet delicate and slow at the fore.
7: “Light Echoes” (6:09) - An overall build up of electro-zen epiphany
8: “Devotion II” (4:59) - A culmination to the rest, smooth build up and conclusion with synth and percussion, background electric guitar.
