DuH: In Just
Red Toucan, 2011

FREE IMPROV – A very quiet quartet from Germany and Hungary: Drummer Martin Blume put the group together, but it’s very much a collective effort. Frank Gratkowski doubles on sax and clarinets, pulling many sounds from each, while the presence of both viola (Szilárd Mezei) and cello (Albert Márkos) gives it a creaking softness.

Fo’s Picks: try any

1. 10:55 – slow, atmospheric, rustling: unseen creatures scurry in the dark
2. 6:56 – steady stream of quiet percussion and creaks; disorder rises & falls
3. 6:29 – very quiet: drawn out squeaks, lots of little string & clarinet swoops
4. 4:01 – string plinks & plunks over playful drums, switches to rough squeaks
5. 6:34 – sax & viola spin in tight rising spirals; open drums, droning cello
6. 5:50 – percussion fills in the silence, strings prowl & poke at the edges
7. 2:26 – quiet but very busy: everyone percolates like coffee
8. 10:19 – dense and rising in the first half, then slow, droning, near-silent
