REZ ABBASI’S INVOCATION: Suno Suno
Enja, 2011

MODERN JAZZ – Guitarist Rez Abbasi leads a band of longtime associates (including cerebral pianist Vijay Iyer and sax firebrand Rudresh Mahanthappa) through seven intriguing tunes with tricky, winding melodic twists and South Asian harmonies. There are subtle hints of Qawwali devotional music too, and many of the solos have a dreamy, ecstatic air. Abbasi’s records are always worth listening to, and this is no exception: challenging yet seductive music.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 7

1. 13:08 – trudging rhythm: piano runs bright & dark, spirited sax/guitar solos
2. 11:15 – sort of soulful Indo-Pak blues thump, plus a brief visit to outer space
3. 1:43 – lush solo piano intro to #4
4. 6:57 – surging tension into heavy swing; tight melody, hot sax, bluesy guitar
5. 9:42 – relaxed and meandering, but solos have an urgency that fights it
6. 9:55 – a long journey: dizzying piano labyrinth, guitar creeps, sax builds up
7. 11:26 – happy intro gives way to low, serious groove and brainy solos
