TIM HAGANS: The Moon is Waiting
Palmetto, 2011
POSTMODERN JAZZ – Trumpeter Hagans leads an energetic quartet through some interesting jazz-rock and post-bop territory. The group has a very open sound despite the careful structure of the compositions, with some of the melodies kept to a bare minimum. This band’s peaks are like a slap in the face: drummer Jukkis Uotila shreds the edges of some tracks (see #2,7), matching the leader’s bold (sometimes even pissed-off) declarations. Watch out for Vic Juris’ mercurial guitar, too.
Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8
1. 6:22 – sneaky little back-alley theme; guitar hints at rock, forceful trumpet
2. 6:13 – slouched but turbulent, trumpet breaks into a scream halfway thru
3. 8:45 – 3 parts: calm repetition, spiky trumpet/guitar in space, rock trudge
4. 6:17 – hot postbop ride: solos roll with it, trumpet & drums spur each other
5. 6:53 – warped-blues guitar into greasy oddball strut; elastic solos from all
6. 7:11 – straightforward soulful ballad, guitar leads first half, then trumpet
7. 8:58 – builds from a repeated line: trumpet stomps, guitar in outer space
8. 10:54 – heavy postbop march, good group sound, lengthy bass solo
