EDDIE DANIELS & ROGER KELLAWAY: Live at Library of Congress
IPO, 2011

MAINSTREAM JAZZ – These sparkling clarinet/piano duets have a nice sense of playful openness and elasticity, moving gently from lush passages to swinging interplay. A bit light on the whole, but they make good use of sparse arrangements, making this feel like a conversation.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 9

1. 8:29 – scattered intro drifts into light Gershwin swing; thoughtful solos
2. 7:22 – ever-changing: winding melodies flow through lightly strutting rhythm
3. 5:33 – ballad from “West Side Story”: soft, tender and waltzlike, very sweet
4. 6:14 – playful Thelonious Monk ditty, solos spin out in long threads
5. 6:34 – “America the Beautiful” starts reverent, becomes airy and optimistic
6. 6:12 – quiet ballad: a bit syrupy, but some lovely moments too
7. 6:29 – spinning start, slips into a nice easy stroll but with lots of fill-in detail
8. 7:11 – another soft ballad, almost a lullaby but with a few busy moments
9. 4:27 – upbeat choo-choo train chugger; breaks down into wide-open solos
